Arts Alive!
A Baby Grand at Ballygiblin's?
Yes, on Sunday, May 25, there will be a baby grand piano at Ballygiblin's Restaurant at 151 Bridge Street. Why? Arts Carleton Place presents the Peter Brown Trio Jazz CD Release. Musician extrordinaire Peter at the piano, with Chris Breitner on bass and Bruce Wittet on drums will be performing two shows: 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to10 p.m. Tickets are $10 each per show. Ticket locations: Read's Book Shop, Virtual Art Market in Carleton Place and The Miller's Tale in Almonte. Peter's last jazz CD in 2002, Marie-Claude, had great reviews and was played extensively on CBC Radio across Canada. Franklin Street, being released on May 25, has an eclectic variety of original tunes with an emphasis on acoustic sound. Tickets are limited, so get them now!
Peter is graciously donating the proceeds from the door to the Express Yourself Fund. This Fund has been established and will be operating by September as a new Arts Carleton Place initiative for parents to apply for subsidies for their children to experience the arts. Children and youth can register for art, theatre, dance or music lessons, workshops, etc. The fund will be co-ordinated by a committee of citizens from our community that believe the future of the arts is through our younger generation. The committee will develop guidelines and criteria for the fund. Stay tuned for further information.
The other funding programme is the Awards Programme for graduating high school students and for community artists. The deadline date is Friday, May 23. Please check out the website and apply. There is $6,000 available for deserving artists in all mediums.
For the writing crowd, the CAA Writer's Circle meets at Read's Book Shop on Thursday, May 22 at 6.30 p.m., free to CAA members, $5 for non-members. A Scriptwriting Workshop is taking place at the Carleton Place Library on Saturday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact: somertonsmith@yahoo.com
On the music scene, Open Mic Night on May 15 and 29 at Ballygiblin's starts at 7 p.m. Young musicians are encouraged to come out and perform. Check it out!
There is a cool jazz duo performing every Thursday at St. James Gate Pub starting at 6:30 p.m. The Mississippi Blues Society Jam is always on the first Tuesday of every month, 8 p.m. at the Thirsty Moose.
For the art lover, wander over to Lux Gallery on Lake Avenue, the Virtual Art Market and Brush Strokes on Bridge Street. All have exhibitions promoting our local artists and beyond. Their prices for original art is reasonable and affordable compared to Ottawa galleries.
The Carleton Place and Beckwith Historical Society will be opening the doors at the Victoria School Museum, 267 Edmund Street on Friday, May 30 for their new exhibition, Kaleidoscope. For further information call 613 253-7013.
For railway and nostalgia buffs, the CPR Railway Memorabilia display in the former CPR roundhouse, which now houses the Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers is well worth a visit. Enter through the Real Wool Shop Boutique. For more information call 613 257-2714.
