CARLETON PLACE November 2007 - Catch a Star in Carleton Place December 1!
December 1, "Catch a Star at Christmas" in downtown Carleton Place. Twenty-eight local Business Improvement Association members will host displays and performances by Arts Carleton Place members. Artists will be on hand to talk about their work and help shoppers select the perfect Christmas gift.
Musicians, dancers and singers will participate in this unique Christmas shopping experience. The Mississippi Mudds Youth Theatre will perform an original new play written especially for this event. The Carleton Place & District Community Band Elves will be at Ulanda's Flowers & Gifts and at The Blossom Shop. Flint's Furniture & Electronics will feature the Bowes Brothers CD. Robynn Glockling will be performing at the Virtual Art Market; Grace Armstrong will be on keyboard.
Anne McRae, the 2007 Arts Carleton Place Bursary Award winner, will be performing songs from her latest CD "You're My Star on Every Tree" at Ballygiblin's Restaurant from Noon-2 p.m. She'll sign CDs for you to enjoy during the holiday season. While there you can admire Kevin Mallory's photographs and paintings.
Melanie Ingram will exhibit multi media at the Good Food Company. If jewellery is your passion, check out Peggy's Passions Jewellery at Golden Scissors Hair Salon. Deborah Aitken's visual arts are presented at Valley Design Co. Nancy's Impressions hosts photography, jewellery and Christmas decorations by Rowan Charters.
Is pottery what you are looking for? You'll find marvelous pieces by Victoria Jenkins at Graham's Shoes. Paintings, anyone? Carleton Place is blessed with talented artists: Ray Girouard displays his work at The Granary, Phyllis Moore's work appears at the Real Wool Boutique. Jim Ramage will have paintings at the Thirsty Moose; Jan Gilbert will show hers at Magoo's Café. Rose Wilson's pictures can be found at Natural Pet Foods, while Muriel Yost shows at New Beginnings. Page & Turners Bookstore will present Doodle Dog Pet Paintings by Kellie Oliphant-Burns.
Don't forget our wonderful photographers! The Paper Pony presents Silver Fog Photography by Shannon Thompson; Read's Book Shop features the work of Susan Fisher, while Fran Roberts displays at Carleton Place IDA. Louise Devenney's pictures will be on display at Wisteria, while Brush Strokes will feature the work of Patrick M. Kavanaugh and Peter Lewis. (More about Brush Strokes follows!) At the Carleton Heritage Inn, you can see the drawings and photography of Chris and Al MacLachlan. Lux Photographic Services presents the wonderful glass art of Craig Angus.
For the children there is Breakfast with Santa at the Carleton Heritage Inn and watch out for Frosty the Snowman. Children can create their own craft items at Hands Down in the Carleton Place Mews. Elizabeth Riley Travelling Band will also be there as well as at the Remembrance Gift Shop. Free photos will be taken at Toys and Treasures; Robin Andrews is on hand with candid photography. Drop in for Craft and Story time at Page and Turners; see the Nativity play at the Wool Growers.

Enjoy the day in downtown Carleton Place - the Place for families at Christmas. A perfect Christmas stocking stuffer for $10 is the 2008 Arts Calendar. Drop by after Saturday, November 17, at V.A.M, 77 Bridge Street to purchase the calendar. Check out the original art, pottery, jewellery, etc. that would make wonderful gifts for the holiday season.
And what about Brush Strokes...what's that? Brush Strokes is the brand new gallery cum arts supplies store cum café, cum studio, opening later this week. Owner Faye Lavergne's enthusiasm really comes through as she talks about her plans for the store. She's very pleased to be doing this in Carleton Place. Her dream is "to give artists a place of their own in their own milieu". The gallery will have a featured artist wall; there will be works from artists of varying experience. You can sit and enjoy one of the Fair Trade coffees or teas and decadent desserts in the café or simply admire the restored brick walls and beautiful tin ceilings as you lounge on the leather sofas. If you are interested in creating art or require meeting space, Brush Strokes will be taking bookings. Official grand opening is planned for Friday, November 23 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The location is 129 Bridge Street.
On Saturday, November 24, celebrate the second anniversary at Read's Book Shop. It's a big thank you to all of you that come for a look, a coffee, a friendly hello, a suggestion, to buy a book. Please call 613-257-7323 to get celebration information.

Reminder: Arts Carleton Place is holding its Annual General Meeting Tuesday, November 20 at 7 p.m. at Mexicali Rosa's, Highway 7. Everyone is welcome to attend. There will be a sampling of Mexican appetizers after the meeting. Come out to see what Arts Carleton Place has accomplished in 2007.
