The people of Arts Carleton Place have outdone themselves with the planning for Sounds of Downtown. Dozens of musical, dance and literary acts are lined up to perform on Bridge Street in addition to the displays of visual art that will pepper the venues.
Eleven of the main street businesses have opened their doors to the event which will take place on Sept. 8 from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. when Sue Foley headlines the event at 10 p.m. at the town hall.
Arts Carleton Place hosts the event as a way to raise money for their awards program, which goes right back into the community to promote the arts. Both high schools benefit from $1,000 bursaries for a graduating student continuing in the arts. Arts Carleton Place goes that extra mile and donates a grant to an artist in the community to help them move along in their career.
In a world where arts programs are slowly disappearing from our schools, an event like this can remind us that the arts are among the most important elements of our society. Not only can we communicate with each other through art, we can express the very elements of our being. Through word, brush stroke, dance, or song, in some way art can speak to everyone; it can say something to each person in a different way.
What it is saying in Carleton Place is that the arts community is alive and well and is working hard to stay strong.
Additionally, Arts Carleton Place is taking a major step in promoting local business. Large corporations are moving in all around us and there is a lot of hype surrounding the arrival of those businesses, so the promotion of independent retailers and restaurateurs is paramount for our downtown core.
The Sounds of Downtown will give patrons the opportunity to meet business owners and familiarize themselves with local fare, while enjoying an event that is unlike any other in our area.
So dedicated are the performers and artists, that they are donating their time for the Sounds of Downtown. All are volunteers, save for the headliner. The event is just a chance to showcase their work; everything from glass art to paintings to slam poetry to Middle Eastern dance. It's a chance to show off and revel in the sheer number of artists and performers this town has.
Sounds of Downtown is a coming together of business promotion, entertainment and arts awareness, and Arts Carleton Place deserves a resounding round of applause for highlighting the very elements that make us unique.
