Beat the February Blahs with Art, Music and Theatre
By Christina MacLachlan and Ina Jackson
February 19, 2009

The winter doldrums have officially set in and cabin fever is a reality for many of us. I have a cure - a sure fire way to beat the blues. This month and next, we can indulge in the arts.

Start at Ballygiblin's - that wonderful restaurant with amazing food at 151 Bridge Street. Spend an evening treating your palate to the gourmet fare offered and take in the art on the walls. Until the next Flippin' Art Night on Thursday, March 19, you have a chance to see the work of two fabulous local artists - photographer Richard Ellis and painter Lorrie Beaton. Richard is a member of a local camera group called Photography Matters. He presents three main subjects in this show: theatre, flowers and the Canadian North. Richard describes himself as a work in progress. Four years ago, he took up the camera and took some shots of a dancer. Encouraged with the result, he has continued with theatre and dance subjects. In "Dancers-Blue and Red", Merida Mexico, Richard uses the movement of the dancer’s costume to create dramatic linear patterns that give a real sense of the body in motion. In "Yellow Flower with Bee", the photographer has treated a small subject as something monumental and at the same time made it small again by showing a bee on it. It's a wonderful paradox that makes this piece very striking. I found myself especially moved by the images of the Skaglak fiord, the result of a recent trip by the photographer. The majestic northern landscape is bathed in a warm light that makes it glow.

The work of Lorrie Beaton (aka Hannah von Eden) is quite a contrast. Who is this Hannah von Eden anyway? - I'll let Lorrie explain it herself - "The character of Hannah Von Eden was born during a long and gruelling rehearsal for a play that I was directing many years ago. I was grumpy and made some unkind comments to the actors in the heat of the moment. Hannah von Eden became my directing alter ego, and brought a great deal of humour to the rehearsal space with her nasty comments! I started taking on the character of Hanna von Eden while painting. It was fun, because I was able to blend together my theatre background and my love of visual arts. While in character, Hannah allows me to explore ideas, create a mood for the piece, and indulge in all those dark and lovely places." Hannah's work is both abstract and realistic in its elements. Some of the pieces speak on a decorative and rhythmic level. "Gabbia Dorata/The Gilted Cage" has a wonderful three-dimensional quality and interesting use of print and gold borders. Other pieces are very message oriented and speak loudly. "La Scrittura Sulla Porete (The Writing on the Wall)" is very graffiti like and communicates with each viewer on a very personal level. Don't forget March 19 to see what goes on the walls at Ballygiblin's. A special treat, Claudia Coutu Radmore will be there, reading some of her fabulous poetry and writings.

Speaking of Claudia, she will be signing copies and reading from Arctic Twilight at Read's Book Shop, 6.30 p.m. tonight, Thursday, February 19. An Arts Carleton Place member and supporter, she is an artist, internationally published writer, member of the League of Canadian Poets, Haiku Canada and Kado Ottawa. Congratulations!

After being at Read's, head down to hear classic jazz at St. James Gate Pub, with Peter Brown and friend playing 7-10 p.m. Note the new time change.

On Saturday February 21, it's Opening Night for Saturday Night Music...Live at the Gate! Every Saturday starting at 8 p.m. there will be an evening of acoustic music. Kirk and Curtis Armstrong are the opening featured performers. The owners, Stan and Francine Clarke, are hoping the community comes out and supports our talented local performers. A new menu the "5 and dime" has been created with items $5 or $10. This new venue will bring out a listening audience that appreciates live music in an intimate setting. On February 28, Live at the Gate features two acts: Joe Chalmers/original folk/roots music and Lisa Kopil performing cover tunes. Book a table with your friends and enjoy!

The Mississippi Mudds Youth Theatre Group is presenting the musical Bugsy Malone Jr. Performances: Thursday, February 26 and 27, 7-9 p.m., Saturday, February 28, 2 p.m. Tickets: $12 at Lux, 613-253-2299. Bring the family to live theatre and support this talented, energetic troupe as they hit the stage at the Town Hall.

A call to artists: Brush Strokes is having a one-day $100 or less Art Sale, on Sunday, March 29, 1-4 p.m. Each piece sold: 50% goes to the artist, 20% to children's art classes, 20% to Brush Strokes, 10% to Arts Carleton Place. Call 613-253-8088 to register.

So venture out into the cold, dark night and take in some of the bright lights that are shining in Carleton Place this month. I guarantee that it will banish those winter blues.
Arts in the Place
Saturday Night Music... Live at the Gate!

There's more music happening at St. James Gate Pub in Carleton Place. Stan and Francine Clarke, owners of the pub, noticed that there was an entertainment gap for a music venue on a Saturday evening. The town has the regular bars that draw a younger crowd, but something was missing. An evening of acoustic music catering more to a listening audience in an intimate setting seemed to fit the bill. Opening night for this new venture, entitled "Live At The Gate", is Saturday, February 21 at 8PM featuring Kirk and Curtis Armstrong. Kirk is a well-known local performer and a member of Arts Carleton Place, who has just released a new CD entitled Island. February 28 will feature two acts: Joe Chalmers with original folk/roots music and Lisa Kopil with an eclectic mix of cover tunes.

The Clarkes are keen to support and promote local musicians and performers. Artists will be booked for one or two sets every Saturday. CDs will be for sale at the venue. This is not an open mic night setting. So all you musicians out there - drop in and check out The Gate! Kerron Lamb, an accomplished musician, is co-ordinating the booking schedule. She can be reached at lambk2001@yahoo.com or 256-7914.

There will even be a special menu, the "5 and dime", designed for the evening. All the tasty items will be $5 or $10. Cute, eh?

Mark your calendars for the Saturday the 21st and 28th, book a table with your friends and enjoy the music! And don't forget that Thursday nights from 6-9PM are jazz nights with the Peter Brown Duo - now into their third year of performing at The Gate.

St. James Gate Pub is located at 111 Bridge Street in Carleton Place (257-7530).

Michael Kaeshammer to headline Sounds of Downtown for Arts Carleton Place on September 6!

The third annual Sounds of Downtown fundraiser presented by Arts Carleton Place and co-sponsored for the first time by the BIA is happening on September 6. We are pleased to announce that Michael Kaeshammer is the featured headliner for the Town Hall Auditorium concert. The fun starts on Saturday, September 6, at 6:00 p.m. with entertainers performing in various locations on Bridge Street till about 9:30 p.m., followed by the Town Hall Concert at 10 p.m. All performances will take place simultaneously. Start at either end of Bridge Street to enjoy the entertainment and free munchies at each location!

Passport sales kick off on Saturday, August 2nd at the Bridge Street Bazaar, 9.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. Visit the Arts Carleton Place booth at the red-tented artists' area near the Post Office. If you attended this event before, you know to expect a great time, but remember it was a sell-out both years. We wanted to let you know about the great entertainment lined up so you can get your passports early. Passports to all venues including the concert at 10 p.m. are $25.00. Secondary passports for $15.00 will also be available permitting entry to all venues except the final concert.

Here's this year's programme so far:

At the Carleton Heritage Inn, "Friends of Scoon" hosted by Jack Denovan will be a tribute show dedicated to Dale Scott featuring the best of Lanark County's country music performers. Perennial favourites, the Mississippi Blues Society will be playing and singing the blues at The Thirsty Moose. St. James Gate Pub keeps up the tempo with Colin Chalk, your Irish Celtic and folk singer while the Mississippi Muddsingers are back again for your pleasure at Brush Strokes featuring Peter Brown on the keyboards. Ballygiblin's Restaurant will present the Rumbavants, a wonderful Latin/World Music trio.

The Carleton Place and District Community Band are back again this year. You can also visit the Chamber of Commerce red tent to check out their photography and literary contest submissions!

There are more locations and performers coming on board, so check out our poster for the final programme on August 2!

The grand finale of the evening, of course, is the Town Hall concert featuring pianist Michael Kaeshammer in a solo performance. This is jazz with an overlay of youthful exuberance, boogie-woogie and bebop. From his roots in boogie-woogie as a teenage prodigy, he has matured over his ten-year career into a rising jazz star!

Michael offers his own engaging take on such well-known tunes as St. James Infirmary, and I Found a New Baby, as well as original pieces of his own, like Cinnamon Sun, Too Far Down, and the title tune on his fifth and latest CD, Days Like These. Released in October 2007, it showcases not only his fantastic keyboard magic, but also his vocal talent as well as his skill as a songwriter. He fills concert auditoriums in Europe as well as North America. While touring as special guest with Colin James, he earned standing ovations at every show!

In April, he was the featured artist of the month on CBC Radio-Canada's Espace Musique. This summer he is on tour of Canadian jazz festivals with Holly Cole. On Canada Day, he will be in London's Trafalgar Square. In August, Michael will perform at the Summer Olympics in Beijing at the Canada House. And of course, in September, he is right here in Carleton Place! You can listen to some of his tunes at www.kaeshammer.com.

This is going to be a fantastic evening. Both 2006 and 2007 were sell-out performances. You won't want to miss Michael Kaeshammer, or the rest of the great performers lined up, so you'll want to pick up your tickets early!

The vernissage took place on Sunday, January 13th, 2008, and will run until February 26th. Participation in this show is by lottery, with 10 photographers selected to be part of the exhibition. One day in fall, they are given the secret location, with 30 minutes to shoot one roll of film using one camera and one lens. This year's shoot included two models rather than one, which provided some unique opportunities for wonderful photos. Make sure you drop by the gallery at 11 Lake Avenue West to view this exhibition.

If you are in the Almonte area, drop by The Groundz, 78 Mill Street. Database artist Phyllis Moore is displaying her paintings there until the end of February. Phyllis has been an artist all her life, working in clay as a founding member of the Ottawa Guild of Potters, and also makes paper, which she often uses in her paintings. Phyllis describes her painting style as impressionistic, although sometimes she likes to do a realistic piece or something quite abstract. To quote Phyllis, "Bright colours with their modulations and juxtapositions captivate me. They make me happy to be painting and I feel a satisfaction in living with them, and hope others do as well." Why not take a look? You may want to take home one of Phyllis' pieces yourself!

Read's Book Shop is planning an event on Friday, January 18th, called "Travel Tales". This is a fundraiser for SchoolBox and the library that Sarah from Read's is going to help build in Nicaragua. Four speakers will participate and the floor will be opened for those who have signed up to share a two-minute tale of their favourite travel story. It is an international potluck; guests will come in international clothing. Sounds like a fun evening for only $10.00 per ticket in advance, $12.00 at the door.

Don't forget about the Jazz Nights Thursdays at St. James Gate, 6:30 p.m. with the popular duo, Peter Brown and Mick Collins. Smooth listening, great food!

On a final note, Friday, February 1st, Ballygiblin's presents a Mardi Gras Party Dinner and Dance at the Carleton Place Arena. This is a benefit event for the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital Foundation. Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo will be on hand, providing some great music. The dance is $10.00. Cajun Dinner and dance is $25.00, from 7:30 p.m.- 9:30 p.m. The band plays after dinner. Tickets for sale at Ballygiblin's, SRC Music, and the CPDMH Foundation Office. For details call 257-2200 ext. 856.

ARTS ALIVE! December 2007... A great year for the Arts in Carleton Place!
By Carol A. Stephen, Arts Carleton Place

Arts Carleton Place held its Annual General Meeting Tuesday, November 20th, at Mexicali Rosa's. Board members and subcommittee leaders gave presentations on the accomplishments in 2007. The Annual and Financial Reports were presented, and M.J. Lancaster from V.A.M announced the launch of the 2008 Arts Calendar.

At the meeting, it was announced that the existing Board Members, subcommittee leaders would continue into the coming year:

Accomplishments:

Human Rights Day held in March 2007, changed its focus from a school-based event to a community-oriented one. Most of this year's "Be The Change" event took place at the Town Hall Auditorium. A free afternoon programme for children and families demonstrated the challenges we face as well as sharing messages of hope and progress. The evening was a silent auction fundraiser for the arts along with wonderful music from Maria Hawkins and TRN as well as a dance performance by Parvaneh Rowshan's group.

In April, the Ottawa Poetry Collective presented an evening of enthusiastic Slam Poetry at Read's Book Shop, spurring some of our local poets to take their turns at the Open Mic portion of the evening.

Our second annual "Sounds of Downtown" fundraiser took place on September 8th, 2007, providing a great evening of varied entertainment held at several local venues, including Lux Gallery, The Heritage Inn, The Good Food Co., The Thirsty Moose, V.A.M/Surrounding Memories, St James Gate Pub, Ballygiblin's. There were buskers at a number of locations along Bridge Street. As well, Page & Turners Bookstore welcomed back the Slam Poets, and next door at Screentex, the Mississippi Mudds and a certain belly dancer had patrons out dancing in the street! The Moore House was a backdrop to readings from the Historical Society and German Oompah-pah music from the Community Band. This year's Town Hall concert featured blues guitarist and vocalist Sue Foley!

Our database of artists has doubled, with more than 60 artists on our roster! Check out the website to view artist biographies and samples of work. There is a section for current activities as well as links to important arts websites.

Arts display walls have continued at Read's Book Shop, Page and Turners Bookstore and Ballygiblin's Restaurant.

Established the Arts Café, a monthly get-together for database artists and for signing up new members. This was held every month at Page & Turners Bookstore, on the third Thursday of the month. Beginning January 17th, this event will alternate each month with Flippin' Art Night at Ballygiblin's. Here you can meet the artists as they change out the art on display and enjoy yummy appetizers at the same time. 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A Canadian Authors Association Writers' Circle was established in Carleton Place. Members meet once a month at Read's Book Shop.

Arts Carleton Place has also created partnership opportunities for artists by presenting them at existing businesses and events in town, such as at the Bridge Street Bazaar and the Heritage Festival.

Arts Carleton Place has been a participant in the ongoing Strategic Planning process for the Town of Carleton Place and in the Economic Development initiatives for the town.

Presented monetary awards to two high-school students and to an established artist in the community.

That is quite a lot to achieve in just one year, and we are very proud at the contribution we have made to our community in 2007.

December and upcoming events to watch for:

A unique Christmas shopping experience in Carleton Place...Catch a Star!

On Saturday, December 1, Arts Carleton Place and the BIA invited shoppers to drop into 28 businesses to meet artists as they displayed their talents in visual arts such as photography, painting, pottery, glass art and jewellery. As part of the Catch a Star programme, some of the highlights were the Mudds Youth Theatre performing an original play, Robin Glocking singing classical holiday songs, the Community Band Elves playing Christmas music and Anne McRae singing songs from her new CD, "You're My Star on Every Tree". It was a chilly day but the spirit was there for this first-time event. We hope this will become an annual Christmas outing for the community to participate in and to support our local businesses and the arts.

Jazz at St. James Gate December 20th and 27th, 6 p.m. featuring the inimitable Peter Brown and Mick Collins for your listening pleasure while you dine on some of the best food in town.

Arts Carleton Place congratulates David Whiteley, on being named Carleton Place Citizen of the Year, 2007. Coincidentally, David happens to be one of our database artists, and I gather he usually works quietly in the background when he volunteers. About time to step into the spotlight: Best wishes, David!

For more information on the 2008 arts scene and upcoming events, or about joining the artist database, please visit www.artscarletonplace.com.

So from all of us to all of you, Happy Holidays and remember to support the arts!

The Canadian Authors Association (CAA) Writers' Circle in Carleton Place is gearing up for another year, with the first meeting of the season taking place at 7 p.m. Monday, October 15th, at Read's Book Shop, 130 Lansdowne Avenue. Meetings take place once a month on a Monday (which one to be determined at the first meeting). The group is looking for writers to share their works-in-process and their experiences in getting words down on paper. These meetings also provide networking opportunities for writers who usually work in solitude. Ottawa branch-CAA began organizing and supporting Writers Circles in 2005 to assist its members as well as other interested area writers. The branch also realized that writers outside the Ottawa environs couldn't always get to Ottawa meetings, so groups have been established in areas outside Ottawa's boundaries.

In the year to come, we are hoping to hold some joint evenings with the Circles in Perth and Arnprior/Renfrew to provide a broader pool of writing talent to share experiences. We will also be looking forward to a CAA Scriptwriting Workshop to be held in May. Details will appear in this column in the new year.

Poets! Any poets out there looking for a group? CAA is looking for you too! Contact carolstephen2@aim.com if you are interested.

Michael Bowie of Lux Photographic Services Inc. has a workshop coming up this month, the second workshop focused on (no pun intended!) the Chamber of Commerce photo/literary contest, "Reflections and Perceptions of Carleton Place". Michael, former student of the late Malek Karsh, will help you make the best of your photos for the contest. Thursday, October 18th, 6:30 p.m. at Lux, 11 Lake Avenue West, Carleton Place.

Speaking of Lux, drop in to see Adrian Baker's art in the Gallery. If you are an animal lover, you will be blown away by the beauty of her work. Originals and prints are available for a few more weeks.

Heads up for all you Christmas shoppers and lovers of the holiday season! On Saturday, December 1st, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Arts Carleton Place and the BIA are presenting "Catch a Star" in downtown Carleton Place. For the first time, artists from our database will be highlighted at a business or restaurant in a unique shopping experience for everyone. Local businesses are very excited to partner and support our local artists in creating music, painting, pottery, jewellery or the literary arts for all to enjoy. Bring the kids to Breakfast with Santa, look out for Frosty the Snowman, listen to Christmas carols and don't miss the Nativity play at the Wool Growers! Watch for posters and more information. Mark December 1st on your calendars. For more information: www.artscarletonplace.com

The 2008 Arts calendar will be flying off the presses this month. Cost is still only $10 each, perfect for stocking stuffers. A great way to keep on top of goings-on in town! Calendars will be available at V.A.M., Virtual Art Market, 77 Bridge Street, at the beginning of November. Quantities are limited, pre-orders are being taken. Don't miss out!

Hope everyone had a chance to take in the Mississippi Mudds' latest murder mystery dinner, held Friday October 12th, and Saturday, October 13th at the Carleton Heritage Inn. Billed as the homicidal social event of the year, "Wedding from Hell" offered dinner and an evening of "Love, Honour and Murder"! Sounds like it was quite the menu! If you missed it, you won't want to miss the Mudds' Christmas performance, Christmas Love Train. Stay tuned for details in November.

Finally, Arts Carleton Place will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, November 20th at 7 p.m., Mexicali Rosa's on Highway 7. Everyone is welcome to attend. After the meeting, there will be samplings of Mexican appetizers. Come out to see what Arts Carleton Place has accomplished in 2007 and let us know what you want to see in your community!

For more information on the local arts scene check out www.artscarletonplace.com or drop by the Arts Cafe get together at Page and Turners, Thursday, October 18th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sue Foley to headline Sounds of Downtown fundraiser for Arts Carleton Place on September 8th!
By Carol A Stephen

Well, we can finally share our news with you about the concert headliner for this year's Sounds of Downtown event. It all starts on Saturday, September 8th at 6:30 p.m. Entertainers will be performing at various locations on Bridge Street till about 9:30 p.m., followed by Sue Foley at the Town Hall Concert, 10 p.m. All performances will take place simultaneously this year, no staggered start times. Start at either end of Bridge Street to enjoy the entertainment and free munchies at each location.

Passport sales opened on Saturday, August 4th at the Bridge Street Bazaar. If you attended last year's event you know to expect a great time, but remember, it was a sell-out. We wanted to tell you about the wonderful lineup of entertainers so you can get your passport early. Passports to all venues including the concert at 10 p.m. are $25.00. Secondary passports for $15.00 will also be available permitting entry to all venues except the final concert.

What does your passport get you? Here's the programme:

Lux Gallery will feature Aestival String Quartet, along with the dynamic glass art of Craig Angus, one of our database artists, whose work will be on display at Lux from August 12 through September 29th. This show, "Celebrating Women Around the World: Elegance and Beauty", features Craig's unique glass art jewellery. The Heritage Inn hosts Odd Man Out, a Classic Rock group featuring Mike Maher from Page & Turners. You'll be dancing your toes off to their tunes. Local favourites, the Mississippi Blues Society will offer up great blues riffs at The Thirsty Moose. Just across the street, the duet of Robert Catalfamo and David Lajeunesse at The Good Food Company entertain with violin/fiddle, guitar, mandolin and bodhrán, a form of ancient Irish drum.

The Virtual Art Market and Surrounding Memories will feature exhibits of Arts Carleton Place artists, with original art and collectibles for sale along with live music and scrumptious desserts.

At the new Mexican Emporium, drop in for a refreshing drink, listen to music and view the beautiful pottery and art from down south. Olé!

St. James Gate keeps up the tempo with the jazz duo of Mick Collins on trumpet and David Paton on piano. Further along Bridge at Screentex, the Mississippi Mudds gives us "Mississippi Mudds Sing OUT!" highlighting songs from previous shows and favourite gospel songs. In between Mudds' sets, another favourite, Parvaneh Rowshan entertains with her interpretive Middle Eastern dance.

Make sure to stop in at Page & Turners for some rap, hip-hop style Spoken Word from the Ottawa Poetry Collective, returning to Carleton Place with their Slam style poetry. If you managed to catch their show here last April at Read's Book Shop, you already know how fantastic they are. For those of you who missed it, come out and see what the fuss is all about! Of course, our local poets and writers will also be participating in the literary event of the evening.

A new venue this year is Ballygiblin's featuring Fandango, a Latin/World Music trio that I hear is quite wonderful!

Other new locations: The historical Moore House is now just across the street from the Town Hall. Out front, the Carleton Place and District Community Band have organized an 8-member ensemble called Gesundheit! to offer German-style music. Polka, anyone? At this location as well, the Carleton Place and Beckwith Historical Society will offer information about the Mississippi River, Town Hall, and the Moore House itself. Look for the red tent where you will find the Chamber of Commerce offering goodies and promoting their year long photography and literary contest, "Reflections and Perceptions of Carleton Place".

The grand finale of the evening, of course, is the Town Hall concert featuring Sue Foley. Arts Carleton Place is very pleased to present her in concert as our Sounds of Downtown headliner!

Sue Foley is an internationally renowned blues/roots performer: singer, songwriter, highly accomplished guitarist and Juno award winner, considered to be a leading talent in contemporary blues. Born and raised in Ottawa, Sue's first gigs were at local clubs.

In 2000, Sue won FIVE trophies from the Maple Blues Awards as well as the Trophée de Blues de France for Best Female Guitarist. In 2002 she took another five trophies from the Maple Blues Awards.

This is going to be a fantastic evening. Last year's event was a sell-out. With a headliner like Sue Foley, and all the other entertainers on board, you’ll want to pick up your passports as soon as possible!

Passport locations: Page & Turners Bookstore, 135 Bridge Street, and at Lux Photographic Services, 11 Lake Avenue West. Cash or cheques only.

Don't forget to check out our artists on display around town this month:

Gayle Marshall is featured at Page & Turners, Jan Gilbert and Donna Naprstek are showing at Ballygiblin's after August 14.
