Star Horn
A member of the Arts Carleton Place Artist Database
Star Horn is a Mohawk woman from Kahnawake, Quebec. Born and raised on the reserve, she began, at a very young age, to visually express herself, being highly influenced by her Aboriginal culture and sometimes, politically charged surroundings. She attended various high schools with strong art programs: F.A.C.E. (Fine Arts Core Education) in Montreal, and then went to Canterbury High School in Ottawa where she completed a four year program in Visual Art.
She completed her B.F.A. from Concordia University (Major: Studio Art -Painting & Drawing) and went on to study Human Kinetics at UBC.
Star has traveled extensively (Cuba, Greece, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Roratonga, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Northern Quebec, Senegal, Morocco, to name a few) and has these foreign influences and experiences reflected in her work.
After 15 years in B.C. working in graphic design, Star now resides in between Carleton Place and Perth with her family and enjoys the creative life again. In addition to her artwork she also makes rustic wood furniture (which feature her images painted or carved right on them) and traditional Aboriginal jewellery which she sells locally and online. Her Nez Perce-style necklaces, men's and women's breastplates and chokers feature materials such as glass beads, solid French brass, abalone shell, turquoise, leather and hairpipe bone.
A sample of all her creations can be seen at the Virtual Art Market at 77 Bridge St. in Carleton Place, or online at http://www.okwari.ca
