I grew up in Ottawa and the surrounding area. In 2001, my husband and I became snowbirds and during our travels we stopped in the small town of Quartzsite, AZ. While there I was introduced to the world of gems, minerals, semi-precious stones, silver smithing, lapidary, and many other art forms. Wire wrapping and wire knitting (spool knitting with wire) were amongst the courses I took while there. I enjoyed them so much that I soon became an instructor for the Quartzsite Roadrunners Gem and Mineral Club. I now teach wire wrapping and wire knitting on a weekly basis in Ottawa. I find that I am able to pick something up and turn it into a wonderful piece of jewellery. I look at the stone and see pictures or designs; I am then able to envision how it should be wrapped to show off its strongest points. I like the stone to do the talking and have taken a minimalist approach to my wrapping. I use sterling silver and gold-filled wire on the most part, sometimes augmenting with a coloured wire for effect. Some of my pieces include Swarovski crystal, dichroic pendants (a process of fusing layers of coloured glass). My work can be viewed at the Virtual Art Market in Carleton Place or check out my web site at www.thewirelady.com.
