Wife, mother and happily a new great grandmother. I am a self taught artist. Residing in the Ottawa Valley. My interest in painting started at the age of 50, I decided to mid life my way into painting. Painting in both oils and acrylics, finding a passion that is proving to be unmatched to any other type of craft I have done before. As my paintings develop into a work of art, it seems to come alive, through a sparkle of an eye, colour of a sunset or the rolling of a wave, the art pops to life. Landscapes, I am leaning towards although I have done some portraits and many different animals and have been very successful. (continue reading...)
My photographic background spans 20+ years, including the past 4 years as a professional photographer. I studied photojournalism in London England and spent a year hiding behind lamp-posts in the rain, dodging pigeons and trying to snag that perfect picture of London bedlam. Then I discovered studio portraits. Turns out it doesn' t rain in a portrait studio. Even better, I don' t have to hide behind a lamp-post (which is good, as I don't really fit). Craig Angus, glass and tile artist, is driven by the power of imagination, the possibilities of mixing mediums, the use of line, texture and colour and, most importantly, the capacity of art to tell stories, teach and induce feelings.

Craig has invested in his learning process for over 30 years and his work can be found around the globe. Over the past two months alone his work has been shipped to Turkey, Spain, Italy, Washington D.C., New York City, Toronto, Ottawa and, yes, Carleton Place and Almonte. (continue reading...)
Music came naturally to me. My main influences in my teens were Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. I started writing songs as soon as I learned to play. When punk and new wave hit in the late 70's I started a collection of bands which evolved into my first professional band, Manikin that played around the area for a couple of years. I started to teach guitar around this time in order to supplement my income. (continue reading...)

Colours clashing and blending to evolve images that create discussions and beg the viewers to interpret each piece in their own way is the hallmark of Linda Lee Blakney's works. Having always wanting to be an interior designer who plays with colours and textures seems to have driven her creativity in art.

Originally she was a devout water colourist. However, an experimental class in acrylics convinced her that mixed media was for her. (continue reading...)
I've been involved with the arts in one way or another all my life, coming out of university with a Fine Arts degree in the 80's and presently partnering with my husband at Lux Photographic Services wherein I provide design, photo restoration and other creative endeavours from concept to finished product. It is wonderfully liberating and satisfying to be in a business where I am essentially given the raw materials to work with and then have full control from start to finish - actually creating the ideas and images and then having full reign on the printing side whether it be on fine watercolour, canvas or other archival papers. I have been involved with photography since the age of twelve. I began to photograph seriously while still in High School, and decided to peruse a career in photography over my original choice, which was to teach history.

My main interest is documentary photography. I enjoy recording and interpreting those events in everyday life that might otherwise evade scrutiny. I am presently working on a number of self-directed projects, including a more than 10-year study of Canadian Patriotism, and a study of Canadian attitudes towards religion. (continue reading...)

Elsie has spent her life in various communities in Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley presently calling Carleton Place her home. Through Elsie's Art Studio, she refocuses art into its proper position - in the forefront of her life. Her art studio has recently discovered the magic of Encaustic Painting, a 3,000 year-old art form created by the Greeks and Egyptians. When asked why the resurgence in Encaustic in the last decade Elsie responds with ; "It is in large part due to the advantage of electricity and modern tools. Encaustic wax has become an empowering medium for artists of the 21st century. When she adds heat to wax it becomes alive taking the reins of creativity, allowing Elsie to assist. It seems to create an end-result rather than being forced into what the artist wishes it to become. Elsie takes on a secondary role within the process of transformation. Her power is deciding when it is time for the molten development to halt and call a piece finished."

Intrigued with the arts throughout my life, having always enjoyed writing, drawing, sculpture, and painting, I began focusing on painting about fifteen years ago.

This is one of my favourite pastimes and with the advent of digital photography it has given me a great chance to expand my photographic knowledge. I first began to paint occasionally when I was in my twenties, when my daughters were eight and ten years old. In those years, my efforts went into running a household and raising my children, and I did not begin to paint seriously until I was in my forties.

I have no formal training in art, only a lifetime of living, observing and, of course, painting. My favorite subject is abstract art; when I paint, I reject outside input, preferring to let my unconscious self take command. (continue reading...)

Born and raised in British Columbia, I discovered darkroom when I was in grade 6, acquired an old Kodak, with 110 film and flash bulbs. I photographed anything and everything, and finished a roll of film as quickly as possible. At that time, the subjects of my pictures were not important; I couldn't wait to get into the darkroom and watch the real magic begin. Through High School I took every art class that was offered, and spent as many lunch hours in the dark room as possible. (continue reading...)

Painting became a serious venture for me after my retirement five years ago. In 2005 I discovered that I am of Mi'kmaq descent and that explained a lot to me about how I walked in this world and who I was in this world.

My medium of choice is ink and watercolour. When I draw the world around me diminishes to a fine point on the horizon and I feel like I'm listening and watching an entirely unique world unfold before me. I love the sense of immersion I feel when I'm in my colours, in my lines and in the world of my ancestors. I believe art speaks to us in individual tones, which is why someone will love what another does not. (continue reading...)

Music has been a part of my life since I was 12 when I began learning to play guitar. And I've been composing poems and songs since about the same time. In the past 15 years I've studied and can play violin, piano, and mandolin. I'm in two bands at the moment and really enjoy the performing side of things. I also have a home recording setup I use to record my own songs and songs others have written and performed. I've also been involved with photography for about 30 years and although I've been shooting digital for about 10 years, have been working with digital SLR for a some time now. (continue reading...)

I've been taking 'holiday' photos and building stories of our vacations but in the last 4 years have experienced a whole new freedom with a digital camera. I wanted a new hobby that didn't require waking up before dawn. Well, I chose poorly as I've been bitten by the photography bug. I've always been a keen nature buff, but I've learned to see the world in a different light including turning my eye to the 'tiny world'. I find my best photos express contrasts: colour or texture. I'm still exploring and learning though. (continue reading...)

On the surface, Huntley Slim may appear very similar to many other bluegrass and old time bands. But their DIY ethic and energetic live shows revive a tradition not often heard in music today. With a straightforward approach to the creation and execution of their music, Huntley Slim focuses on writing what they know. Mining the collective minds of three distinct songwriters, the band's sound is as varied as their influences.

Photography is a hobby I got into in the summer of 2010. My dad lent me his DSLR camera and gave me a crash course on how to use it for a family trip to the East Coast. In early 2011, I took a photography course at Algonquin College in Ottawa, which helped me understand how a camera operates, introduced me to Adobe Photoshop, and taught me ways to manipulate images using a digital darkroom. It gave me the basic foundation to develop my skills and be more creative with my prints.

Art for me was born out of a need to personally develop a positive focus during a challenging time in my life. As a professional "Family Support Worker", I knew and used art irregularly as a therapeutic tool with many people through the years and decided to use it as one of my own. Five years later, the issues have passed and I’m still painting. I love everything about art! Hence, decided to create a venue where a town could develop into its own artistic masterpiece. Personally, learning every detail, I had no skill level when I began. (continue reading...)

A Toronto Native, I have lived in Carleton Place now for 25 years. I have owned a camera for as long as I can remember. From my first Polaroid Instamatic (still some of my favourite shots) to my new Digital SLR, and so many in-between.

A Photography professor once told me that it is not about the equipment or technology at all, it's all about the eye and composition. Being a purist at heart, making the leap from Old School film to Digital was a huge step but technology won in the end and economically was a good decision - no more processing. (continue reading...)

In the creation of my portraits it is with great pleasure that I put brush to paint and push it around the canvas to unfurl the individual mood and character I see lurking in the faces around me. There upon revealing, with the aid of colour, light and shadow the flotsam and jetsam of everyday life that culminates in the visage we so bravely present to the world each day. There is anticipation as to where we are going or familiarity when re-working an old piece.

Well what can I write about myself ? I could start with that I have always loved the arts, starting with music. I bought my first record when I was 8 years old, AC/DC Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap !! And due to my love of music, I learned how to play the tuba in high school and later on the drums.

I have been rug hooking for over 12 years, and have also taken courses both in Canada, the States and England. I am very passionate about this work, and although it is slow to show results I get much satisfaction in finishing a piece, whether it is on commission, for a friend, family or myself. Because I do both 'Traditional hooking' and Proddy/Proggy I do both abstracts and more formal designs. But although there are always different designs and materials to use, I find that experimenting with colours are my main delight. (continue reading...)

My formal training is in Chemical Engineering and I worked on the product development and quality assurance issues throughout my career.

Even though I was always interested in the arts, I didn't have the opportunity to pursue this path until later in life. My involvement in the Visual arts actually began in 1992 when I started taking evening classes at the Visual Art Centre and at Saidy Bronfman School of Arts in Montreal, Quebec. About ten years ago we moved to Almonte and I continued taking classes at the Ottawa School of Arts. As a result, I am proficient in hand built pottery making techniques and painting on canvas and silk. However, my preferred medium is silk and presently I concentrate on working with a range of silk products and use of several techniques to make the process interesting and diverse.

In 2010 I spent a wonderful week at Canadore College in North Bay taking a Water Colour course from Arlie Hoffman. There were a few lessons, lots of give and take, some wonderful chatter and a couple of plays to see in the evenings. It was nice rubbing shoulders with the other artists, they seemed to get better as you worked your way to the back of the classroom. I was sat at the front!

Later in the year I went on a calligraphy retreat at the Galile Centre in Arnprior organised by Doris Wionzek and a few of her pals from the Calligraphy Society of Ottawa. (continue reading...)

I was raised in the Lower Laurentians, QC and spent much of my adult life in the scientific world. In 2005, I decided to pursue my first love - art.

I have always enjoyed looking at the world through my hands as well as my eyes - textures draw me in. Objects or beings in nature are most often my source of inspiration - what I see and what I imagine could be. Some images are realistic and some only exist inside my head. (continue reading...)
