Arts Alive!

The arts scene is heating up with November and December happenings. Starting off, on Friday, November 13, 7-9 p.m., Mark Garbutt, world travelled photographer and Arts Carleton Place database member, will be at Brushstrokes. On Thursday, November 19, it's Arts Carleton Place Flippin' Art Night at Ballygiblin's starting at 5 p.m. Featured artists Jan Gilbert and Donna Naprstek will be installing new works. Everyone is welcome to meet the artists and enjoy fabulous appetizers.
Don't forget to get your tickets at the Train Station Visitors Centre and Gallery, 132 Coleman Street for the Mississippi Mudds production of The Secret War of Mother Goose. Performances: November 27, 28, December 4,5, at 7.30 p.m. Matinees: November 29, December 5 at 2 p.m. Call 613-257-2031 to reserve your seats. This show has become a holiday tradition for families, so don't miss out!
For book lovers, Read's Book Shop presents authors Lowell Green on Thursday, November 19, 6.30 p.m. and Helen Douglas on Saturday, November 28, 12.30 p.m. Browse through a selection of traditional and holiday storybooks for the children, best sellers or unique gifts for those readers on your Christmas list.

On the music scene: Thursday night jazz, 7-10 p.m. at St. James Gate Pub features Peter Brown, Don Paterson and friends. Live at the Gate on Saturday nights, 8-10 p.m. features acoustic music: November 14: Kirk and Kurtis Armstrong, November 21: Kerrek, November 28: The Night Crawlers. A new venue has just started at Ballygiblin's Sunday evenings, 8 -11 p.m. with Peter Brown, Roger Plant and friends. For Celtic music fans, drop in to Ballygiblin's on Wednesday, November 18, 7.30-10.30 p.m. or at the Carleton Heritage Inn on November 25. These are jams and all ages and levels are welcome.
There is a Holiday Sensation at the Train Station on Sunday, December 6, noon to 4 p.m. The former daycare centre has been transformed into the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Centre Gift Shop & Gallery. Arts Carleton Place co-ordinates the gallery space for the database artists to showcase their works. The Yoga Station, a new business, has established a presence with their studio and art gallery. Paul Nelson has combined his businesses to create Service Central for your entire camera and photography needs. Drop in for your Christmas shopping, enjoy cookies and sweets, hot apple cider and get in the holiday spirit! Bring your family, neighbours and friends!
On a final note, please support our local artistic community by attending live theatre, holiday concerts, listening to fabulous music and purchasing original art. Carleton Place and the surrounding area is so fortunate to have such a talented mix of artists, writers and performers.
