As parents, we are always proud of the accomplishments of our children. Arts Carleton Place has special reasons to be proud this month.
Recently at our annual fundraiser, "Sounds of Downtown", we announced the winners of the 2008 student and artist bursaries. Monies raised go to the awards programme. Carleton Place itself also has good reason to be proud of these young people, who have grown up here and have now made the leap to new and exciting artistic projects inside and outside of our community.
Let me introduce you to this year's award winners:
Jessie Bonnah is currently a student at the University of Ottawa, where she is enrolled in the Honours Bachelor of Arts program with a major in Communications/Co-operative Education. Her stream of study is Media Communications, where she will specialize in press, video production and multi media. Her love of art was nurtured during her years in Carleton Place at Notre Dame High School with Mrs. Jaynes where she explored many diverse mediums including acrylics, ink, charcoal and pastel. She became interested in advertising and graphic design, during a co-op term with Ferguson Graphics. Jessie's paintings can currently be seen at Dorey's and Wood and Feathers in Merrickville.
Lauren LeBlanc is studying Interior Design at Algonquin College. She too is a graduate of Notre Dame High School. Lauren has been interested in art for a number of years and expresses herself through drawing, painting and charcoal. She has a special love for charcoal drawing, where she focuses on a variety of line, shading and texture. During her years at Notre Dame, she was actively involved in the visual arts, participating in activities such as Coffee House and art club. However, interior design is her true love and that is what she will pursue at the post secondary level.
Nathan Flint is the recipient of our third student bursary this year. Nathan is a graduate of Carleton Place High School and is currently enrolled in the animation program at Algonquin College. Nathan has been interested in art for a long time and was fascinated as a child by video game animation. He has studied many forms of visual art including drawing, photography, digital drawings, manga and anime and music. He likes to draw realistically and recognizes this as a foundation for other styles. In high school, he applied inspiration and dedication to his visual art projects. Ultimately, Nathan would like to work as an animator for a company, such as Disney or Pixar.
Andrew Dixon is our final award recipient for this year. Andrew grew up in Carleton Place and attended Carleton Place High School. He has always had a passion and talent for drawing and an unwavering interest in technology. Even his primary teachers have commented on how detailed his drawings were and how focused he was when working on his art. Over the years Andrew has worked to improve his skills and use of a variety of mediums and techniques. Andrew is looking for a career that would incorporate his passions for art and technology and to this end has enrolled in Algonquin College's Print Media program.
Each of these students will receive a bursary of $1000.00
Arts Carleton Place is also proud to announce that we are awarding an emerging artist award this year to Lindsay Fry.
This award is designed to assist an artist who has finished formal training and has a project proposal that has a connection to the community of of Carleton Place.
Lindsay completed the first part of her education in Carleton Place and has been studying in Toronto for the last four years at the Ontario College of Art and Design, where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting, with distinction. She works primarily in oil and watercolour, with a focus on portraiture and landscapes.
On returning from Toronto, Lindsay discovered what she describes as "a new perspective and deeper admiration for my hometown. The old architecture as well as the countless striking vistas of the Mississippi River have inspired me to begin a series of watercolour paintings. I will be continuing these works and would love to share the beauty of Carleton Place with others by reproducing the paintings as greeting cards."
This project, a series of watercolours depicting the Carleton Place area, will take some time to complete. It is an ambitious and exciting endeavour and Arts Carleton Place is pleased to award Lindsay with our Emerging Artist Award in the amount of $1500.00.
As the school year progresses, we will be excited to hear from the students who will be pursuing the dream of becoming trained in the field they have chosen and we will follow Lindsay's progress as she implements her project.
