Welcome Spring! May is almost here, so watch out for new events and happenings with an artistic flair. For theatre lovers, May 1-3 is your last chance to see the Mississippi Mudds' production of Cole Porter's Anything Goes. Tickets at Remembrance Gift Shop.
Get your sombreros and appetites ready for Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican celebration on Saturday, May 3, 11 am - 4 pm on Bridge Street. Mexican music and food, arts and crafts, dancing demonstrations will be taking place. At Ballygiblin's listen to a Latin Band starting at 7:30 pm. Lookout for the Mexican flags at participating businesses. Olé!
On the music scene, Arts Carleton Place is pleased to present the Jazz CD Release of Franklin Street, featuring the Peter Brown Trio. The trio will be performing two shows, 2-5 pm and 7-10 pm., on Sunday, May 25 at Ballygiblin's Restaurant, 151 Bridge Street. Tickets, $10 per show, go on sale May 1 at Read's Book Shop, the Virtual Art Market in Carleton Place and at The Miller's Tale in Almonte. The proceeds from ticket sales are going to the Express Yourself Arts Fund. Arts Carleton Place thanks Peter for his support in developing future artistic opportunities for the children and youth in our community. Tickets are limited, so don't miss out!

LUX Gallery is having a vernissage on Sunday, May 4, 1-4 pm featuring Adriana Steele-Card, working with paper and natural montage and David Card, wood worker. This should not be missed!
On Friday, May 9, 7-9 pm there is another vernissage at Brushstrokes on Bridge Street featuring artist Angela Kilby and her students. The art scene is certainly getting bigger and better every month. Please try to attend and experience the visual arts. For the budding artists in our community, registration is taking place for art classes for all ages throughout the months of May and June.
Flippin' Art Night is on Thursday, May 15 at Ballygiblin's, 151 Bridge Street, 4:30 - 8 pm. The featured artist is Stacey Cassell. His most inspirational source so far is the North West Coast, Cree, and Ojibway native styles. Drop in, have some appetizers, watch as the new installation takes place. New artists can register to be on our database and meet the artistic community. Everyone is welcome.
The Arts Carleton Place Awards Programme deadline date is quickly approaching. May 23 is your last chance to apply. The awards amount to $6,000: $1,000 to each high school to a graduating student furthering their studies in the arts, an artist award of $3,000 towards a community project, and a $1,000 award to an emerging artist. Don't miss this opportunity to apply. Info: www.artscarletonplace.com.
May looks interesting for writers in Carleton Place. On Thursday, May 22, CAA Writers' Circle will meet at 6:30 pm at Read's Book Shop. Writers share their writing for feedback in a supportive environment. Free for CAA members, $5 for non-members. This will be the last meeting of the season. Canadian Authors Association-Ottawa is holding its first-ever "outside Ottawa" workshop, "Scriptwriting", Saturday, May 24, Barbara Walsh Room, Carleton Place Public Library, 101 Beckwith Street. 9 am-4 pm.
COST: $45.00 for CAA members; $75.00 for non-members.

The presenter is Lynn Tarzwell. Lynn's extensive background in writing and the performing arts covers theatre, television, video and radio productions as a writer, performer and voice actor. Lynn runs two successful programmes, Professional Writing and Scriptwriting, at Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology in Ottawa.
The president of CAA Ottawa, Sharyn Heagle, was so pleased to have Lynn agree to put on this workshop that the course was scheduled for May to ensure her availability.
Read's Book Shop, 130 Lansdowne Ave. is inviting everyone to come in and participate in the joys of reading. Every Wednesday is Seniors Day! Free coffee and 15% off regular priced books! We can't forget the little ones, so every Tuesday at 10.30 am there is a Parent and Tot Storytime Drop in. The Mystery Book Club meets on May 1 and Read's Book Club on May 8, both at 7 pm. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo Day, Saturday, May 3, register for Kids Crafts, 10.30 am. To celebrate Mother's Day, register your kids for All About Mom on Saturday, May 10, 10.30am. Call 613-257-7323.
The Victoria Museum is having a fundraising event on Saturday, May 10. This annual yard sale starts at 8 am to raise funds for future displays. There are always terrific items and bargains galore! If you would like to donate good, used items, call 613-253-2013 or 613-253-0019.
To finish out the merry month of May, get your ticket, t-shirt and guide to Wine'd Around Downtown, a wine and food tasting experience in Carleton Place restaurants on Saturday, May 31, 1-5 pm. Tickets: $20 at the Town Hall, Brush Strokes, the Virtual Art Market on Bridge Street. The proceeds will support the Sister City student exchange programme.
And last but not least, Arts Carleton Place is gearing up for Sounds of Downtown, our annual fundraiser on September 6. The headliner for the 10 pm concert has been booked...watch for the announcement in June.

"Anything Goes" - Mississippi Mudds

The Mississippi Mudds of Carleton Place proudly presents the full stage musical "Anything Goes" by Cole Porter. Performances take place in the historic Carleton Place Town Hall on April 25th, 26th, May 1st, 2nd and 3rd at 8 p.m. and Sunday April 27th at 2.p.m.
Tickets are $20/adult or $15/under 18 with a special price on Thursday May 1st of $15/adults and $10/under 18. Tickets for reserved seating are available at the Remembrance Gift shop in Carleton Place 613 257 3931. For more information go to mississippimudds.ca.
