WINTER/SPRING ART CLASSES

Mondays, 9:30am - 12:30pm, 10 weeks, starts Feb. 4, $200.00
Open Studio: Acrylic painting geared towards intermediate and advanced students. Ongoing help with subject matter, composition, painting style, colour mixing, etc. Critique and constructive suggestions to help improve your technique. (Beginner students also welcome, instruction will be provided).
Wednesdays, 1pm - 3:30pm, 10 weeks, starts Feb. 6, $200.00
Acrylic Painting Instruction: Geared towards anyone who has just started, hasn't yet tried painting, or is switching from another medium. Guided weekly lessons include colour theory, composition, and different painting techniques. (More advanced painters also welcome, for an 'open studio' situation - see above).

Coloured Pencil: How to mix and overlay colours to achieve a high realism effect, working on both white and coloured backgrounds. Working from photos and life, subject matter including still-life and animals, and subjects of your choice.
Wednesday evenings, 6:30 - 8:30, 10 weeks, starts March 19, adults $200, teens $175
Acrylic Painting for Adults and Teens: Geared towards beginner and intermediate students. See "Acrylic Painting Instruction" above. (Spring start to take advantage of longer daylight hours).

Database artist Rivka Waas is currently showcasing her artwork at the "Green Door Restaurant" (198 Main Street, Ottawa) from January 2 to February 1, 2008.

ARTS ALIVE! Arts Carleton Place announces 2008 Awards program!

Arts Carleton Place is pleased to announce that we will be adding a new award category for the 2008 program. Applicants from all Arts disciplines are welcome. This year there will be four awards offered:
Two awards of $1,000.00 each for graduating high school students, to further their education in the Arts. One award is presented to a student from each of the two high schools in Carleton Place.
A new award of $1,000.00 to be presented to an emerging/developing artist.
The award to an established artist in the area towards a community project has been increased to $3,000.00
Watch for next month's column for further information on the criteria and procedure for application. Details will also be available at the Arts Carleton Place website at: www.artscarletonplace.com.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, January 17th. Ballygiblin's will host "Flippin' Art Night" from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Come watch as the artists install their work. This is a social evening and a great opportunity to meet and chat with the artists. Al and Christina MacLachlan are the featured artists this time. They would love to say hello. There will be free munchies and a cash bar. This is also the January sign-up evening for artists wishing to join the Arts Carleton Place database. The event will alternate each month with the Arts Café, which will be held at Brush Strokes at 129 Bridge Street. This is a new venue, replacing the Page and Turner's location.
We are all quite sad to see the closing of Page and Turner's bookstore. Donna and Mike Maher have been great supporters of the Arts and Sounds of Downtown. They will be missed. We wish them all the best!
Speaking of Brush Strokes, they are still taking registrations for winter classes for both adults and children. Sign up for watercolour, Basic Drawing, Oil & Acrylic.
Children's classes are by age group:

Cold as it is in January, that doesn't matter to the folks displaying at Lux Photo. They are presenting their fourth annual "Naked in the House". The vernissage took place on Sunday, January 13th, 2008, and will run until February 26th. Participation in this show is by lottery, with 10 photographers selected to be part of the exhibition. One day in fall, they are given the secret location, with 30 minutes to shoot one roll of film using one camera and one lens. This year's shoot included two models rather than one, which provided some unique opportunities for wonderful photos. Make sure you drop by the gallery at 11 Lake Avenue West to view this exhibition.
If you are in the Almonte area, drop by The Groundz, 78 Mill Street. Database artist Phyllis Moore is displaying her paintings there until the end of February. Phyllis has been an artist all her life, working in clay as a founding member of the Ottawa Guild of Potters, and also makes paper, which she often uses in her paintings. Phyllis describes her painting style as impressionistic, although sometimes she likes to do a realistic piece or something quite abstract. To quote Phyllis, "Bright colours with their modulations and juxtapositions captivate me. They make me happy to be painting and I feel a satisfaction in living with them, and hope others do as well." Why not take a look? You may want to take home one of Phyllis' pieces yourself!
Read's Book Shop is planning an event on Friday, January 18th, called "Travel Tales". This is a fundraiser for SchoolBox and the library that Sarah from Read's is going to help build in Nicaragua. Four speakers will participate and the floor will be opened for those who have signed up to share a two-minute tale of their favourite travel story. It is an international potluck; guests will come in international clothing. Sounds like a fun evening for only $10.00 per ticket in advance, $12.00 at the door.
Don't forget about the Jazz Nights Thursdays at St. James Gate, 6:30 p.m. with the popular duo, Peter Brown and Mick Collins. Smooth listening, great food!
On a final note, Friday, February 1st, Ballygiblin's presents a Mardi Gras Party Dinner and Dance at the Carleton Place Arena. This is a benefit event for the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital Foundation. Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo will be on hand, providing some great music. The dance is $10.00. Cajun Dinner and dance is $25.00, from 7:30 p.m.- 9:30 p.m. The band plays after dinner. Tickets for sale at Ballygiblin's, SRC Music, and the CPDMH Foundation Office. Beginner Watercolour workshop - Brenda Wright

"BEGINNER WATERCOLOUR" - With "Oak Lane Studio"
This 6 wk. course teaches the basics of watercolour painting such as: a bit on composition, colour theory, wet into wet techniques, dry brush, paint with water & drop-in colour to see the beauty of watercolour before your eyes.
We plan to cover basic painting of florals, landscapes & still life.
Instructor: Fay Thomson with Brenda assisting.
Registration: Will be held on the morning prior to the first class, so arrive a few minutes early (Jan. 16th). Use side entrance to lower level studio please.
Begins: Wednesday, Jan. 16th
Ends: Wednesday, Feb. 20th
Times: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
COST: $144.00 + Materials *
