Arts Alive! - By Carol A. Stephen

The Canadian Authors Association (CAA) Writers' Circle in Carleton Place is gearing up for another year, with the first meeting of the season taking place at 7 p.m. Monday, October 15th, at Read's Book Shop, 130 Lansdowne Avenue. Meetings take place once a month on a Monday (which one to be determined at the first meeting). The group is looking for writers to share their works-in-process and their experiences in getting words down on paper. These meetings also provide networking opportunities for writers who usually work in solitude. Ottawa branch-CAA began organizing and supporting Writers Circles in 2005 to assist its members as well as other interested area writers. The branch also realized that writers outside the Ottawa environs couldn't always get to Ottawa meetings, so groups have been established in areas outside Ottawa's boundaries.

In the year to come, we are hoping to hold some joint evenings with the Circles in Perth and Arnprior/Renfrew to provide a broader pool of writing talent to share experiences. We will also be looking forward to a CAA Scriptwriting Workshop to be held in May. Details will appear in this column in the new year.

Poets! Any poets out there looking for a group? CAA is looking for you too! Contact carolstephen2@aim.com if you are interested.

Michael Bowie of Lux Photographic Services Inc. has a workshop coming up this month, the second workshop focused on (no pun intended!) the Chamber of Commerce photo/literary contest, "Reflections and Perceptions of Carleton Place". Michael, former student of the late Malek Karsh, will help you make the best of your photos for the contest. Thursday, October 18th, 6:30 p.m. at Lux, 11 Lake Avenue West, Carleton Place.

Speaking of Lux, drop in to see Adrian Baker's art in the Gallery. If you are an animal lover, you will be blown away by the beauty of her work. Originals and prints are available for a few more weeks.

Hope everyone had a chance to take in the Mississippi Mudds' latest murder mystery dinner, held Friday October 12th, and Saturday, October 13th at the Carleton Heritage Inn. Billed as the homicidal social event of the year, "Wedding from Hell" offered dinner and an evening of "Love, Honour and Murder"! Sounds like it was quite the menu! If you missed it, you won't want to miss the Mudds' Christmas performance, Christmas Love Train. Stay tuned for details in November.
